Autodesk® Softimage® software enables you to
more quickly create custom tools and amazing visual
effects through the Interactive Creative Environment
(ICE), a node-based visual development platform.
ICE is designed to help artists be more creative and
efficient, allowing them to explore new creative ideas
with greater ease and simplicity. Beyond effects, you
can use this production-proven 3D modeling, animation,
rendering, and compositing software for every aspect
of your CG (computer graphics) workflow —whether
you’re tackling a game, film, or television project.
Autodesk® Softimage® 2010 software is the fastest version of Softimage ever. Optimization of its core architecture has
resulted in performance improvements including loading and saving of large scenes for greater artist efficiency. This latest
release also features the Softimage® Face Robot® facial rigging and animation toolset, and has been expanded to allow
for the creation of custom Interactive Creative Environment (ICE) systems. ICE effects and Face Robot meshes can be
exported to Autodesk® Maya® software for ease of integration into Maya pipelines when creating complex simulations and
believable characters. Additionally, Softimage 2010 features a number of new tools and workflows for managing scene
complexity.
Accelerated Performance and Enhanced Scalability
The third iteration of the Softimage® GigaCore architecture, GigaCore III, helps deliver superior data handling and
significant speed improvements where today’s projects require it most.
- Loading and saving of large scenes and importing of complex character models is significantly faster. This means
not only shorter wait times, but a superior workflow where scenes/models don’t need to be broken into smaller
pieces.
- Many of the operations most commonly performed on enveloped characters and on large numbers of bjects
have been dramatically improved: playback, large-scale selection, deletion, undo/redo, freezing, duplication and
hide/unhide.
- The Function Curve (FCurve) Editor performs considerably faster when working with large numbers of curves or
large numbers of keys, enabling nimators to edit the animation of a larger number of complex characters at one
time.
- Reference Models have been vastly improved to closely match regular Models. Loading, offloading and Delta
operations are on average around 500% faster, providing essential performance for every pipeline.
Complete Face Robot Toolset
Included in Softimage 2010 is the Face Robot toolset, a professional solution for rigging and animating large numbers of
3D facial expressions quickly and easily. It enables games and visual effects studios to create life-like facial animation at
incredible speeds.
- Create realistic facial animation faster – Animators can quickly solve and animate Softimage, Maya or Autodesk®
3ds Max® head meshes to create high-quality, believable facial expressions.
- Export fully solved Face Robot heads into Maya for more integrated computer graphics (CG) character workflows.
- Motion capture and keyframe animation support helps give animators greater flexibility to achieve the best results.
- Face Robot game exporter helps simplify high quality facial animation for real-time execution in game engines.
Interactive Creative Environment (ICE)
ICE, an open, scalable effects development platform, has been expanded to allow for the development of custom ICE
systems. ICE effects can be exported to Maya for a more integrated CG pipeline.
- New tools in Softimage 2010 allow for the creation of custom nodes which enable technical directors (TDs) and
third-parties to build new ICE systems such as ICE Rigid Bodies, ICE Fluids, and ICE Cloth.
- A performance monitor has been added to the ICE graph that enables artists and TDs to quickly track down which
nodes are creating bottlenecks. These nodes can then be edited or removed to accelerate processing.
- 3D animators can start a simulation in Maya and export it to Softimage to add ICE effects and then import to
Maya for shading and rendering providing increased flexibility when it comes to the creation of complex
simulations.
Tools for Managing Complexity
New tools and workflows in Softimage 2010 enhance artist productivity through efficient management of complex scenes.
- The new Scene Debugger view gives artists and TDs information about a scene’s performance and memory
usage so they can more quickly identify and eliminate bottlenecks.
- A new, easy-to-use scene search toolset helps artists and TDs quickly locate specific scene elements.
- Added support for grouping of layers helps artists and TDs efficiently manage scene elements.
